We at UnEQuilled are dedicated to bringing you unique high quality handmade quilling. Quilling (or Paper Filigree) is art formed by rolling, shaping and gluing paper strips together creating decorative shapes and designs - flowers or leaves, and grillwork patterns that interpret ornamental wrought iron work.
The earliest mention of quilling includes reference to 15th century monks and nuns who used quilling to decorate religious articles. The name "quilling" probably refers to the duck or goose quills that were used to turn the paper. During the 18th century quilling became popular in Europe where ladies of the upper class practiced the art. There is also some evidence that quilling came to the Americas and there are some examples of Colonial quilled pieces.
Today, quilling is again becoming popular and can be used to decorate almost any item from wedding invitations or birth announcements, greeting cards, scrapbook pages, and boxes. Quilling can be seen in art galleries in Europe and the United States and is a popular art in England, Australia, India and South America.
